Your rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regarding your education records at CCOM.
Annual FERPA Notice
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. This notice describes those rights and how to exercise them.
Your rights under FERPA
1. Right to inspect and review your records
You have the right to inspect and review your education records within 45 days of submitting a written request to CCOM. Submit your request to the administrative office identifying the record(s) you wish to inspect. CCOM will notify you of the time and place for review. If CCOM cannot provide access within 45 days, it must notify you of the reason and set a date within a reasonable time.
2. Right to request amendment of your records
If you believe a record is inaccurate, misleading, or violates your privacy rights, you may request that CCOM amend it. Submit a written request to the administrative office identifying the specific record and explaining why it should be changed.
- If CCOM agrees, it will amend the record and notify you.
- If CCOM disagrees, it will notify you and advise you of your right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if CCOM still does not amend the record, you have the right to place a statement in your record explaining your objection.
3. Right to consent to disclosures
CCOM will not disclose personally identifiable information from your education records without your written consent, except in the following circumstances permitted or required by FERPA:
- Disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interest (faculty, administrators, staff, contractors acting on CCOM’s behalf in performing their official duties)
- Disclosure to officials of another school to which you are transferring
- Disclosure to parents of a dependent student as defined by the IRS
- Disclosure in connection with financial aid you have requested
- Disclosure to comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena
- Disclosure in health or safety emergencies
- Disclosure of directory information (see below) unless you have restricted it
4. Right to file a complaint
You have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if you believe CCOM has failed to comply with FERPA:

Directory information
FERPA allows CCOM to designate certain information as directory information — information that may be disclosed without consent unless a student restricts it. CCOM designates the following as directory information:
- Name
- Enrollment status (full-time / part-time)
- Dates of attendance
- Program of study
- Degrees and certificates awarded, including dates
To restrict disclosure of your directory information, submit a written request to the administrative office. Restrictions remain in effect until you request removal.
